Chapter 13

Mary had never imagined such an odd wedding in her entire life. Recently, she had begun to believe that she wouldn’t have a wedding at all, given the fact she was not invited to many of the Season’s events, given the circumstances to which they had fallen.

However, even as a girl, she had never imagined a wedding like this one. She had, as a child, imagined a service in her local church in the country. Here, in London, she was married in St. Paul’s Cathedral. Only a few guests were in attendance. Courtney, the Duke of Clyde, her mother, and her two sisters. But it had been the most remarkable and resplendent of affairs. How could it not be?

The cathedral itself was the most beautiful of buildings. She’d been in it before, of course, but she had never imagined that she could be married in it. Such places were for royals. Much to her ever-growing amazement, Mary realized she was now part of the greatest of all sets of English society. And now, her mother and her sisters were too. They all could aspire to great comfort. The sort most could never dream about.

Suddenly she was overcome by such an utter wave of relief as they walked out onto the steps of St Paul’s Cathedral and down towards Rafe’s beautifully appointed coach, she felt tears slip down her cheeks. Rafe caught her in his arms and looked down upon her face.

“Are you regretting marrying me?” he asked softly, surprised by her tears.

Mary shook her head, smiling as she explained, “These are tears of joy.”

He carefully wiped the salt water tracks from her cheeks. “I am glad I cause you joy and not pain. A lady shouldn’t cry out of sorrow on her wedding day”

“I don’t think you could ever cause me pain Rafe,” she declared, savoring his hand holding hers.

“I pray that be true,” he replied and swept her down to the coach and away from the crowded street.

Her mother and her sisters would eventually come to Blackmore’s town house. For now, they would go and pack up all their belongings from the small house on Hanover Street. With Courtney and the Duke of Clyde’s supervision. For Rafe apparently trusted no one else with such a delicate task. Her husband was being very careful.

Her father had not been in attendance at their wedding, much to her relief. Rafe had told her her Father was already on his way to Venice. At the news, her mother had taken a deep breath and her shoulders had unbowed. In a single moment, she appeared several years younger, the careworn look vanished. It had given Mary such hope too, to know her sisters and she would never need fear their father or his machinations again.

As the coach made its way through the cacophonous city streets towards Rafe’s establishment to the West, she began to truly allow herself to relax. She no longer had to fear, she was truly free with Rafe as her husband.
